This course provides an overview of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, focusing on their history as one of the constituent bands of the Lake Superior Chippewa. It explains the migration of the Anishinaabe peoples, the distinct geography of the Nett Lake, Vermilion, and Deer Creek sectors, and the cultural importance of the wild rice harvest. Participants will study the impact of the fur trade, the specifics of 19th-century treaties, and the ongoing efforts toward tribal sovereignty and resource management in Northern Minnesota.
