About
This course examines the history, culture, and legal sovereignty of the Bay Mills Indian Community, also known as Gnoozhekaaning. Since their ancestors settled along the shores of Lake Superior, the tribe has maintained a profound connection to the Great Lakes. The curriculum covers the Anishinaabe roots of the community, the impact of the 1836 Treaty of Washington, and the landmark legal fight for fishing rights in United States v. Michigan. You will also explore modern tribal governance, the role of Bay Mills Community College in language revitalization, and the management of ancestral lands in the Upper Peninsula.
